Well, after a bit of a hiatus I’m back in Melbourne and ready to keep shooting for 101 Penis. The work hadn’t actually stopped, though I mainly use Facebook 101 Penis page and my email list (subscribe here) to reach out for participants.
Please check out the 101 Vagina website to see what the completed 101 Penis book will end up looking like. There are some example photos and stories there and you can purchase the book.
If you’re interested in participating please have a read of the “Participate” page on this site and email me at email@example.com
Onwards and upwards :)
Finally I am going to do some photos in Sydney for the 101 Penis project!
I will be in Sydney from 25 Nov – 5 Dec. That’s NEXT WEEK!!! and the week after.
There will be perhaps 2 or 3 sessions I will arrange where everyone can come in at once (still private one on one sessions for the photos) though I will also be available to do private shoots if you either can’t make it during those times or you are concerned about anonymity or you simply feel shy or vulnerable. I want to accommodate everyone who wants to participate.
The shoots are likely to take place around the inner West.
If you’re interested in participating please reply to this email letting me know what times would generally be best for you (weekday evening? weekend morning? etc) so I can arrange some times that suit most people.
Also, please start working on your message for the book, which I need you to email to me BEFORE you come in for the shoot. This can be:
- between a word and a page long
- poetic or prose or any other style
- silly or serious, irreverent or reverent
- sharing a personal experience around your penis that shaped your relationship with it
- feelings, thoughts, philosophical or spiritual standpoint, etc.
Please take some time to consider your words. Imagine people reading them in a gallery or in the book. Perhaps a teenager, growing up and dealing with the confusion our society currently has around sexuality and our bodies. Perhaps an elderly person who has never felt permission to openly talk about these issues for their entire life. Perhaps a lover, perhaps even a hater.
Don’t let this restrict you in any way, but let it expand you. I want the book to reflect the vast breadth of experience, rather than the narrow views that the mainstream promulgates. See if you can find an edge somewhere. If you’re afraid of saying something then that might be a good place to start, or if you just want to make a wisecrack then that’s ok too :) I want to create a space of permission.
As with the messages, I really want to get as much diversity into the book in terms of physical appearance also. Please don’t let any doubts or shame or discomfort you have with your body in general or penis in particular prevent you from participating. You are welcome and needed :)
Since this is a project that will be published as a book etc I also need participants to sign a standard copyright release form. This is a standard model release form I downloaded from the RMIT university website.
Ok, looking forward to hearing from you all :)
Following on from the huge success of the recent 101 Vagina Book Exhibition as part of the Sydney Fringe and Melbourne Fringe, photographer Philip Werner is now gearing up to begin working on the next project, 101 Penis.
As with 101 Vagina, the 101 Penis coffee-table book will comprise 101 nude photos of the pubic area, along with a message written by each participant.
The aim of the projects to break down the taboo around our genitals and sexuality, generate debate, and help everyone feel more comfortable with themselves.
The feedback from the 101 Vagina exhibition was heartfelt and overwhelmingly positive. “Most people report that they find it confronting, but in a way that allows them to open, rather than closing them down.” Werner says.
“We tend to be more aware of women’s body image issues because they get more airtime in the media, but I believe penises are surrounded by just as much of a taboo as vaginas. The only issues the media talks about about is size and performance, but I believe that men’s relationship with their penises is much more nuanced than that.”
“The penis is the exposed tip of the heart.” James Broughton
Participation is on a voluntary basis and the men are asked to write a “message from or about their penis to the world” before the shoot. The message will accompany each photo in the book and subsequent exhibitions. Werner is seeking men of all shapes, ages, sizes and colours, everyone is welcome. The aim is to have the broadest range of men represented as possible.
Photographic shoots will be done in Melbourne and Sydney over the coming weeks and people interested in participating can get in touch via email or check the website for more details.
101 Penis is finally getting off the ground!
Yes, the website http://101penis.com has already been up and running for a while, but I haven’t had the space to actually begin photographing and collecting stories for the 101 Penis book until NOW !
So, I am hereby announcing the first couple of dates for photo shoots for 101 Penis.
Please spread the word ! :)
Participants will need to:
1. Send me their message to be included in the book before they come to the photo shoot. This is just so that I don’t end up needing to chase people for their message down the track.
2. Sign a release form on the day of the shoot.
I have created Facebook events linked below that men can join and share, though joining the FB event is not necessary.
Below is are the details for the photo shoots as posted to the FB events also:
It begins !
First photo shoot for the 101 Penis project.
Tuesday evening 23rd April 5pm – 7pm.
Second photo shoot:
Thursday evening 25rd April 7pm – 9pm.
This is the companion project to the 101 Vagina project, the book of which was recently launched on the 22 March 2013.
See and buy the 101 Vagina book here: http://101vagina.com/
See also the 101 Penis Facebook page where other photo shoot events will also be posted: https://www.facebook.com/pages/101-Penis-The-taboo-smashing-coffee-table-book-project/314575851960096
So that this project does not take me another 2-3 years (like the 101 Vagina book did), I am organising a few times where a few men can come in at once for a shoot. The actual shoot will still be individual (one person in the studio at a time), but we can also have tea etc and sit around and share stories and talk about issues/experiences/thoughts/feelings if it works out that way.
The shoot will be at my studio in Brunwick, I will give address details individually as people confirm their attendance.
What I need from participants:
– You need to write and email me your “message to or from your penis to the world” BEFORE you come in for the photo shoot. This can be a statement, message, poem, story, or personal experience about/around your penis. This is your opportunity share a message about your penis with the world, a world which I believe misrepresents penises very profoudly.
– You will need to sign a release form on the day giving me the rights to publish the material.
Please email me, Philip, to confirm your participation and send me your message, or with any questions you may have at:
Please feel free to invite other men, but they will each need to confirm their attendance and get their message to me before the shoot. Note in particular that I am hoping to get diversity into the project, diversity of age, physical appearance, ethnicity etc. All men are welcome!
NOTE!!! PARTICIPATION IS ANONYMOUS. BY COMING IN TO THE SHOOT YOU ARE ALSO AGREEING NOT TO MENTION ANYONE ELSE’S PARTICIPATION TO ANY ONE ELSE WITHOUT THEIR EXPRESS PERMISSION.
If for any reason you are uncomfortable coming in for a shoot at the same time as other men we can arrange a time for you to come in individually.
I’m very much looking forward to seeing how this project evolves!
It has begun !
After almost two years working on the 101 Vagina project, the 101 Penis website is officially launched:
101 Penis – The taboo smashing coffee table book project
Have a look around the site and feel free to get in touch with any suggestions, recommendations or if you would like to contribute or participate in any way.
Whether I would also make a penis book was one of the most common questions I was asked while working on 101 Vagina. I had long intended to do so, but wanted 101 Vagina to be further along the road before taking this project on.
I’m looking forward to the ride! It will be interesting to see what issues arise out of this and how it is similar and different to the 101 Vagina project. A taboo is a taboo, but the circumstances around each are unique. Men and women are, after all, different and I suppose these projects may be pretty close to the core of these differences.
It seems to me that women’s issues have received more attention in the media generally. I’m sure it’s also due to my focus on vaginas from the 101 Vagina project, there seems to be more vagina love going round than penis love. It also seems that it’s more commonly accepted for homosexual men to express an appreciation of penises than it is for heterosexual women. Why should this be so?
And what is the nature of the taboo around penises? Well, I hope that the posts that will follow here, and the messages that will be in the book, will give us some idea of that that actually is. I’m sure there will be many different view on the subject and many men’s experiences shared, which will hopefully give us pause to think about the issues at hand.
